Permit to dig versus excavation inspection

Why authorising a dig and inspecting the excavation are two different records.

The short answer

A permit to dig controls the proposed work before excavation begins: area, services, method, people and validity. An excavation inspection records a competent person’s findings about the actual excavation at the required time.

A realistic example

A drainage trench may have an authorised permit for grid B3-B5, then require a start-of-shift inspection and another inspection after heavy rain or a material fall.

How SiteHQ supports the workflow

SiteHQ keeps the permit and inspection as separate records, each with its own responsible person, status and evidence.
